1. Get money back from SEIU in the form of an organizing grant;
2. Pay new members $25.00 for signing up;
3. Pay recruiters $10.00 for signing up new members;
4. Figure out a clever way to market it!

This makes much more sense than buying a bunch of shirts and hats for members that they will wear twice as recruitment tools.
Cash talks and the $25 can be used to take away the cost issue as in most cases that is less than the difference in dues over a couple of years.
Also an incentive for people trying to recruit. It is a union, but it is also a business and needs to be run and marketed like one. The first time someone say no, I walk away. For $10 I will ask again.
It does make a bit of sense doesn't it? I have been told by staff at my campus that they would be much more inclined to revisit those who say no at first if we had such an incentive in place.
Conversely, I wouldn't blow off the promo items -- they're great for visibility. They may also be used to advertise web addresses for both HQ and your chapter.
Thanks for your comments,
Joseph
